A new study from researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine shows that yoga can benefit ethnic minority breast cancer survivors, particularly African-Americans and Hispanics, as well as those from under-served communities.
During the 12 week study, researchers compared quality of life measures between two groups of women with early stage breast cancer; one group took a weekly yoga class and the other group didn't. More women in the non-yoga group experienced a worsening of social well-being compared to the yoga group. The yoga classes seemed to offer social support, which may have helped counteract loneliness and isolation, which is common after a cancer diagnosis.
The women in the yoga group participated in a gentle, seated form of yoga based on Integral Hatha Yoga, and classes were provided in both English and Spanish.

The 30-something Anne-Marie Weeden writes in a recent blog post:
I was genuinely confident at the beginning of this process that the whole chemo thing should not affect life too much. And in the first three treatments it didn't really. But the last three have just escalated in terms of the challenges they have thrown my way. They said it would be cumulative but I didn't realise it would accumulate on such a scale. I'd say the last two treatment cycles have been at least ten times as hard as the first one.
Meg Wolff survived cancer -- twice. First she had bone cancer and lost her leg to the disease. A recent study made public this week concluded that black women saw more deaths when it came to breast cancer as the cause. The reason? Current hormone-based treatments that help others with the disease are less effective in black female patients.
Recent reasons for the death rate disparity had been chalked up to fewer mammograms for black women, but this is a biological cause, plain and simple.
With this recent study's conclusion, the race to fine what biological differences exist that hinder effective hormonal treatment is sure to follow. With Estrogen in the mix as a cancer growth promoter, what else is there specific to black females playing a role here? This development will be interesting to follow.
Despite her recent breast cancer diagnosis, Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts is already speaking out about the cancer cause. In fact, she just recently spoke to a group of cancer survivors and activists at a fundraiser in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Roberts is also speaking about the relief she feels now that her diagnosis has been made public -- "It was like the weight of the world was lifted," she said.

Her piece, called 'Feel the Hope', will be signed and sold at $49, with 100% of the profits going to breast cancer. Rios says that the painting was named by her former husband, who himself is battling cancer and is not expected to survive. The artwork and its title are meant to offer hope to those battling cancer.
Rios is a well-know painter whose work adorns the walls for the White House, as well the homes of many celebrities. I think it's great that she is offering some of her talent to the ongoing battle.
Six-time Grammy award winning R&B singer and songwriter Toni Braxton wants everyone to know she does not have breast cancer, despite media reports stating the contrary.
"There has been a rumor circulating that I have been diagnosed with breast cancer," said the 39-year-old mother of two. "After feeling something uncomfortable in my left breast, I went in for a screening. I was very fortunate that they did not find anything and I am in great health."
Braxton, 39, encourages all women to attend annual exams and take precautions to prevent breast cancer.
Studies are showing that low-dose radiation treatments may increase the risk of breast cancer. This may include diagnostic chest x-rays, as well as other treatments like radiotherapy for skin conditions. The findings aren't conclusive thus far but they warrant further investigation, according to this article.

If you've had breast cancer surgery, you may have heard of being hypnotized beforehand to alleviate the need for more-than-needed anesthesia. Sounds weird, but a clinical trial of 200 cancer patients showed that hypnosis was more effective than counseling in this area.
Is this further proof that there is a strong link between mind and body? That link has always existed, contrary to main western medical practitioners (like pure scientists) who require proven evidence. The mind and body work in concert in almost every way. At least, they do in my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
In the study, 100 women underwent hypnosis for 15 minutes one hour before breast cancer surgery while a second group had counseling sessions for the same 15 minutes. Complications like more pain and more anesthesia were less prevalent in the hypnosis group.

There is nothing unusual about a non-profit organization publishing a calendar. There is something very unique about this one. Life is a Carnival is a bold approach to mastectomy and reconstruction education.
This 2008 calendar features photos from FORCE: Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered members who have undergone bilateral mastectomy -- with or without reconstruction. To retain the anonymity of the models, they are wearing mardi gras masks.
This project is meant to celebrate life after mastectomy, to showcase many types of reconstruction and non reconstruction options in a nonthreatening and positive light. The calendar contains information about the models surgery with references included to the chapters in the Breast Reconstruction Guidebook which explains each procedure. A secondary goal of this calendar is to raise needed funds for FORCE programs.
Triple-negative breast cancer means that the pathology report has shown the cancer to be estrogen receptor negative, progesterone receptor negative, and HER2 negative.
Results published in Clinical Cancer Research found that women with triple negative breast cancer have an increased risk of metastatic disease and death during the first few years after diagnoses, but not after that time period.
A study was conducted among 1,601 breast cancer patients. One hundred and eighty women (11.2%) had triple negative breast cancer.
